New for this week: Brühl!
This is a must read for you if you love historic German cities, beautiful castles, and homemade ice cream.
The first thing you should check out when you visit Brühl is the castle. It’s really two castles, and the preferred term here is palace. So there are two palaces, the Augustusburg and Falkenlust palaces. They were built by the Archbishop of Cologne in the 1700s. The Augustusburg palace is the main palace, and Falkenlust is the hunting palace, where the Archbishop displayed a lot of falcons.
We were not able to go inside the castles, because we did not reserve a spot on the tour ahead of time. Make sure you do that if you would like to tour the castle!
The castle is a really convenient visit if you arrive by train- the train station is only about 200 feet away.
Another popular attraction is Phantasialand, a park that is quite similar to Disneyland. There are different cultures represented like Berlin, Mexico, Chinatown, and more. There are water rides, roller coasters, arcade games and more. It certainly sounds like fun, and all the locals rave about going (well, at least the children).
Those are the biggest attractions in Brühl, but Lucas and I also found some hidden gems, for example, the Eis-Cafe Segalla. This is an ice cream shop that serves enticing ice-cream treats that look just as good as they taste! The gelato or ice cream has a unique flavor, but it is much worth the trip. Lucas recommends the Erdbeerbecher or strawberry and vanilla ice cream with strawberries, strawberry syrup, and whipped cream. 😋
Another activity you can do in Brühl is go to the lake. There are lots of lakes around Brühl, and they offer you lots of activities like water skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, and even jet skiing. Make sure you call in advance if you’d like to do any of the activities. Swimming is not really allowed-only in certain areas, and I also found out that at most lakes you have to call in advanced and reserve a spot to go swimming.
We went to Lake Bleibtreusee, and we didn’t have the best experience, because we did not reserve a spot ahead of time. Nevertheless, the lake was super neat, and we would like to go back. Now we know how we can make our next experience there more fun!
