Garmisch-Partenkirchen: The Little Gem of Germany

Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GAP) was originally two towns, that Hitler forced together in 1935 to prepare for the 1936 Olympics. The Olympic ski jump is still located in GAP, and they use it for training still to this day, for young and old alike. In the summer, they wet the turf down with a sprinkler before the individuals jump. I never knew you could practice ski jumping in the summer!

If you love being surrounded by mountains, it is a great city for you, with a beautiful lake nearby. We LOVED it here, and could even imagine living here someday, or at least returning for a visit.

There are lots of things to do here, such as taking a cable car to the top of a mountain, venturing to the tallest mountain in Germany – the Zugspitze, exploring the Eibsee, a crystal clear lake, or exploring the historic old city. There is even Partnachklamm, a gorge made by a crystal blue river that you can explore.

There is a historic building in the old city, fittingly called “das alte Haus (the old house). It is from 1772, and is one of two houses in this neighborhood that were not harmed in a fire in 1811 and another in 1865. This means you can view the original artwork and architecture of the building.

The old city is quite unique because it features a lot of rustic paintings on its buildings, lots of which are religious. The main street has loads of hoppin’ cafes, shops, and restaurants which are lively even till the wee hours of the night. The Air BnB where we stayed was right across from a hotel and restaurant, which had a live accordian playing the popular regional tunes. Not to worry, though, the windows were noise cancelling! We couldn’t hear a thing!

We loved Garmisch-Partenkirchen, as there was a nice mix of old and new. New buildings and old buildings were intermixed, and the city did a nice job of incorporating both. If you aren’t into alpine adventures, you can hang out in the city and play mini-golf! For us, it was a fun challenge!

It really is a lovely city, and the locals are very friendly. I loved it here, I loved the relaxed nature of the locals, and cannot wait to go back. As a side note, Lucas had some of his favorite beer here. Paulaner Weissbier- dunkel! Try it out when you come to the region!
