Some people want to travel, but feel it is too expensive. Plane tickets alone can cost 1,200 dollars or more round-trip.

There are some things you can do to save money regarding your flight. I have found that with planes, it is often cheaper to get flights with layovers instead of flying direct. For example, when flying to and from Germany, we have had layovers in Dublin, London, and Lisbon.

Scheduling a layover in one of these cities not only saves you anywhere from 300 to 600 or more dollars, but it gives you other advantages as well.

I like to take the time to get up and stretch my legs before being crammed into another seat on a plane. Some people prefer flying direct, because they like to get there quicker, but I don’t mind stretching my legs and using a decent bathroom.

A third advantage to having a layover is that you have the chance to see another country. This is one of my favorite things about getting a layover. I like to pick different countries to have my layovers in, because then I get to see something new.

This summer, I had a layover in Lisbon, Portugal. I purposely planned this so that I would have 10 hours from when I landed to when my next plane departed. I was traveling with family, and we took this time to explore the city of Lisbon.

We took a go-cart tour of the city, walked on the pier, had lunch at a restaurant, explored a famous monument and the historic inner city. It really was quite an experience, something I would have never had the chance to do if I didn’t schedule a layover there. Portugal really wasn’t on my list of countries to visit, but because of the layover, I was able to see it.

I have also heard that it is cheaper to buy tickets if you are looking online on Tuesday nights instead of on the weekends. The reason for this is that a lot of travel companies put out their deals on Mondays, and if you look online Tuesday nights, it gives the airlines a chance to match the deals the travel agencies are offering.

I hope you use these tips and more to save you money on your future plane travels.
