Santorini Day 5: Our Last Day, Catching Up on Missed Adventures

Greece day 5

This morning, I decided to wake up early and go outside for a run. I fully accepted that our day would be structured differently due to the change in flight details. With that being said, my friend Nada and I wanted to attempt something that we had failed earlier in the week. Any guesses?

After our last breakfast at the hotel ☹️, we brought all our gear down to the lobby and set out on our final adventure. We walked down some stairs, alleyways, and finally climbed across some rocks. Any ideas where we are going yet?

Slowly, we made our way around Skaros rock. Did you guess where we went correctly?

This time I was wearing a t-shirt and tennis shoes, and was totally prepared for this hike. No more sandals for this girl! We followed the locals and other tourists to where they were climbing the rocks in order to get to the very top.

Lesson: Follow the locals if you can’t find your way. Generally, not always!

It was probably a 15 to 20 foot climb up the side of a rock. A friendly man gave me a hand and pulled me to the top, where I finally got to stand and look at the amazing and gorgeous view! It was a full 360 degree view of Santorini, not a single thing obstructed my view. After soaking in the view for a few minutes, it was time to climb back down and walk back to the hotel. The climb was totally worth it.

As we were making our way back down the cliff, we saw a trail that led all the way down, seemingly to sea level and completely in the opposite direction of our hotel. We didn’t know where the path went, but Nada convinced me to follow it and see where it would take us. As we were walking, we saw an interesting helicopter flying in the air. Checkout the video to see what we saw!

At the bottom of the mystery trail, we saw a little white church in the middle of nowhere! It seemed like nobody was around, and you couldn’t hear a soul. It was so quiet and peaceful. The only signs of life were a small green plant inside the church window. After taking some quick photos and enjoying some of the solitude, we made the climb back up the trail and to our hotel.

I decided to have lunch at the hotel today because we probably would not be having dinner with the plane scheduled as it was. So, after taking a nice cool-down swim, we sat at the bar and I enjoyed a pina colada along with a watermelon feta cheese salad. It was so fresh, and a wonderful end to an amazing trip. (I now added this to my list of recipes I make at home).

We had a bit of an adventure getting to the airport, though. We were worried we might not be picked up, because no taxi had arrived after 5 minutes from when they were supposed to arrive, then 10 minutes…and we began frantically calling the company of the taxi to ask them if everything was still confirmed. They did not answer.

Just as the owner called me back, our taxi arrived. It was very interesting. The driver seemed upset because we had been calling his office, but we just wanted to be reassured that we had a ride. He was 13 minutes late, which is not a big deal, and we had around 2.5 hours before our plane took off, so we definitely had time. He explained that he was held up by all the cars on a one-car road. He had to wait for them to go before he could go through.

They only recommend getting to the airport 1 hour before the flight, because the airport only has 1 gate and so they don’t want a lot of people congregating. Regardless, we got there 2 hours early, even with the delay. They are also working on remodeling the airport, and it seems as if they are creating more gates, but I am not sure.

At the airport we got to watch our plane land and taxi to the location where we would get to board. That’s how small the airport is! We eventually landed in Dusseldorf safe and sound. Lucas was happily there to pick me up (even though it was 11 pm), and we went home and back to our wonderful little fur balls! I missed the kitties so much! And Lucas of course 😉 Then it was off to bed. Sweet dreams!

Greece is assuredly a country to visit. Be sure to visit the islands as well as some of the historic places. I did not get to see them, but that’s for next time!
